ABOUT GIF

Why are GIFs so large?

GIF dates from 1987, so it compresses poorly and can show only 256 colors. A GIF can be several to dozens of times larger than an MP4 of the same length, so keep the range short and the size small.

ABOUT SETTINGS

Which settings work well?

For messengers and communities, 480 px wide, 10–12 frames per second and 3–6 seconds is a safe choice. Doubling both the frame rate and the size makes the file roughly four times larger.
